The Nepali community in Edmonton celebrates its culture through festivals such as Dashain and Tihar. Dashain, a fifteen-day festival, symbolizes the victory of truth over lies, light over darkness, and good over evil. During this celebration, younger people show respect to elders and receive blessings, while families strengthen their relationships through fasting and worship.
Tihar is another important festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. During Bhai Tikaa, siblings place vermillion-colored rice on each other’s foreheads and pray for each other’s good health and well-being.
Teej is a major Hindu festival celebrated by Nepali women. It is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and symbolizes love, devotion, and marital happiness. During Teej, women observe fasting, wear red clothes and jewelry, and gather to sing and dance. Married women pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands, while unmarried women pray for a good husband. The festival also brings families and communities together through religious worship and celebration.
